Tom Petty Refugee Riff

Welcome to this week’s coaching session. As a brief reminder, these short weekly sessions are designed to get you playing your guitar on a regular basis. I’ll be covering a wide range of subjects (at different playing levels), including Riffs, Techniques, Skills and just stuff that’s fun to play.

In most cases, the sessions are linked to other material in your Members Libraries, so I hope these stimulate your interest in learning more or playing whole songs with me and the full band!

In today’s session we’ll be looking at a simple chord routine and how to embellish the chord changes with a simple melody line. This is taken from the song Refugee by Tom Petty. It’s a great song, so I hope you’ll want to play the full song with me and the Band – it’s in your song library (Pro Members).

Members Note: All of the coaching sessions will also be loaded into your online Libraries, so you can come back to them whenever your like. This session will be loaded in the next few days.

So here it is! Let me know what you think by leaving me a comment at the bottom of the page.

I played this for the first time in a front-room jam the other night. Great fun.
Add a bit of flavour after the two F#m chords – play them both quite firmly, then on the low E string, hit 2nd fret, 4th fret as a walk-up to the A chord. Sounds great if you add just a bit of fuzz!

    Hi Andy

Really good lesson. However I am a beginner and was unable to catch the rhythm. Is it possible to spell out the strumming pattern?

    Thanks

    Teck

Watched the site for a couple of days, it seems like what I’ve been looking for.

Joined last night. Very impressed, mainly with the way the instruction is structured.

Best thing I’ve come across – I’m sure this will help.

Am new to your website but have enjoyed your teaching so far and your free lessons.

Any chance of including some easy “On the porch” acoustic BLUES lessons.

Today we're looking at Power Chords and the classic JJ Cale song Cocaine. Although this is very much more in the style of the Eric Clapton version.

Sad news................"The Father of Loud" Jim Marshall, the founder of Marshall amps, died today aged 88. Slash tweeted "The news of Jim Marshall passing is deeply saddening. R & R will never be the same w/out him. But, his amps will live on FOREVER!"

I say, set up yer stack and rock heaven 'till it shakes.

That man defined the heavy rock guitar sound.

Yes it's happy birthday to Johann Sebastian Bach...born in 1685. Did he influence any great rock guitarists????
