Taxman – The Beatles

Now onto Riff Number 2. This comes from both Taxman by The Beatles and also Start by The Jam. Again they are in the Key of E, using notes from the Em Pentatonic scale. This is a simple Riff, but this time we’re just adding a little more to our right hand practice with some string picking and left hand, with sting stopping.

So here it is! Let me know what you think by leaving me a comment at the bottom of the page.

Thanks Andy. You’re a constant encouragement to me. I’ve been struggling to work out the “Tax Man” riff and now, thanks to you, I can play it.
    Cheers.

    Hi Andy,

I like the ethos of what you’re doing here, somewhat different approach to other sites. Just one point – you state that ‘Taxman’/'Start’ are in the Key of E and that you’ll be using the Em pent scale. Technically, I believe, that’ll mean it’s actually in the key of G major (or E minor). People are often not clear and they say something like “oh, it’s in ‘A’” (for example), without stating major or minor. This isn’t just being pedantic – major & minor are two different things and I know this really confused me when I started out. You may wish to check my comments with someone well versed in music theory…

Today we're looking at Power Chords and the classic JJ Cale song Cocaine. Although this is very much more in the style of the Eric Clapton version.

Sad news................"The Father of Loud" Jim Marshall, the founder of Marshall amps, died today aged 88. Slash tweeted "The news of Jim Marshall passing is deeply saddening. R & R will never be the same w/out him. But, his amps will live on FOREVER!"

I say, set up yer stack and rock heaven 'till it shakes.

That man defined the heavy rock guitar sound.

Yes it's happy birthday to Johann Sebastian Bach...born in 1685. Did he influence any great rock guitarists????
