Still Got The Blues

Gary Moore (4th April 1952 to 6th February 2011) was an Irish musician from Belfast best known for his guitar work with Thin Lizzy and, more recently, as a solo blues/rock guitarist in his own right. He died of a heart attack in February 2011 in his hotel room whilst on holiday in Esteponia, Spain.
His melodic, yet powerful solos are no more evident than in the introduction to what is probably one of his best known songs, Still Got The Blues, taken from his 1990 album of the same name. This album was a departure from Gary Moore’s previous hard rock style to one having a bluesier feel.
To play the opening guitar of this great song you need to have mastered accurate bends and the application of vibrato with a fluidity of style, especially if you want to play it live. Your guitar will also have an over driven sound that ensures there is a longevity to the notes as they ring out through each riff, especially at the end of the phases. Gary Moore used his trademark Gibson Les Paul to achieve the beautiful sound heard both on the record and when he played live. A great song to master and be able to play with real feeling.
On December 3, 2008, a Munich, Germany court ruled that the guitar solo in the song was plagiarized from a 1974 song called “Nordrach” recorded by a German band called Jud’s Gallery. Although Gary Moore denied knowing of the song, due to its unavailability on record or CD at the time, he was ordered to pay Jürgen Winter, leader of Jud’s Gallery, an undisclosed amount in damages due to copyright infringement. This despite the court ruling that there was no evidence that the solo was actually lifted (stolen) from the song. That’s copyright for you!

Today we're looking at Power Chords and the classic JJ Cale song Cocaine. Although this is very much more in the style of the Eric Clapton version.

Sad news................"The Father of Loud" Jim Marshall, the founder of Marshall amps, died today aged 88. Slash tweeted "The news of Jim Marshall passing is deeply saddening. R & R will never be the same w/out him. But, his amps will live on FOREVER!"

I say, set up yer stack and rock heaven 'till it shakes.

That man defined the heavy rock guitar sound.

Yes it's happy birthday to Johann Sebastian Bach...born in 1685. Did he influence any great rock guitarists????
