Somebody Put Something In My Drink

Used in numerous film productions and covered by a multitude of modern bands like Children Of Bodom and Plan 4 to name a few, Somebody Put Something In My Drink is one of the funniest Ramones songs, though it never reached the fame of songs like I Wanna Be Sedated, Blitzkrieg Bop or Rock n Roll Highschool, which is a bit strange, considering the fact that it definitely had all what it takes to become a hit, but it somehow got outshined by Bonzo Goes To Bitburg, which was featured on the same album.

Speaking of Ramones albums, it’s a good idea to note that Somebody Put Something In My Drink was the opening track for Animal Boy, which was the ninth studio album of The Ramones that got released in 1986. The 80s were generally a difficult period for the band, because they were marked by numerous lineup changes. Nevertheless, The Ramones recorded a couple of high quality albums at that time, with Animal Boy reaching number 143 on the Billboard 200 chart. However, the 80s Ramones albums were a bit of a disappointment for some of their true fans at that time, because they were very little punk and much more pop.

Somebody Put Something In My Drink is one of the Ramones easy guitar songs, as it is based on only 4 guitar chords: A5, F5, G5 and E5. Exactly the fact that it is based solely on powerchords makes it one of the easy guitar songs that you can quickly learn to play on guitar. The real challenge for you will eventually be to learn playing it with downstrokes only, because using only downstrokes will require much quicker reactions from your picking hand and you may be uncomfortable with it at first, but you will hear how much more powerful the song will sound played this way.

Let’s go back to the song. Somebody Put Something In My Drink was written by Richie Ramone (Richard Reinhardt) who was in the band for only 3 years prior to writing this song. Reinhardt was playing the drums, but stayed with The Ramones for only 5 years – from 1983 to 1988. The main reason for his departure was a dispute about the money he was getting as a share from t-shirt sales. Anyway, Reinhardt wrote Somebody Put Something In My Drink telling his own story about an incident he had, in which he ordered a drink in a bar, only to realize that it has been spiked with LSD after drinking it. Bad things followed as you can hear from the song lyrics.

Somebody Put Something In My Drink was revived in 2003 by the Finnish metal band Children Of Bodom, being featured on the Japanese Edition of their fourth studio album entitled “Hate Crew Deathroll”. Their version of the song wasn’t too much different from the original and reached many fans. Some of them remembered about the Ramones and enjoyed their stuff once again and some learned about them for the first time, but in general Children Of Bodom’s cover resulted in a boost in popularity for The Ramones.

Today we're looking at Power Chords and the classic JJ Cale song Cocaine. Although this is very much more in the style of the Eric Clapton version.

Sad news................"The Father of Loud" Jim Marshall, the founder of Marshall amps, died today aged 88. Slash tweeted "The news of Jim Marshall passing is deeply saddening. R & R will never be the same w/out him. But, his amps will live on FOREVER!"

I say, set up yer stack and rock heaven 'till it shakes.

That man defined the heavy rock guitar sound.

Yes it's happy birthday to Johann Sebastian Bach...born in 1685. Did he influence any great rock guitarists????
