This classic Beatles track appeared on the 1967 album Rubber Soul and, although, attributed to both Lennon and McCartney, was primarily written by John Lennon. It is a great ballad and written about an affair(s) Lennon was having (although he was not sure who with) but was written in such a (disguised) way so he did not upset his wife at the time. It is also probably the first example of a rock band featuring a sitar, brilliantly played by George Harrison.
The great intro is played on acoustic guitar (with the sitar additions) and is classic Beatles intro that duplicates the verse melody line
To play the intro in the same key as the original recording, a capo is placed on the second fret and makes use of both strumming and string picking techniques. It all starts out with a D chord shape played on the fourth fret (this is actually an E chord) and is played in ¾ time i.e. it is a waltz.
In order to learn the intro in a fashion that makes it relatively easy, it is best to learn the notes that make up the melody line before attempting the integrated strumming patterns – the majority of which are based around the D shaped chord with the fingers remaining in place on the B and E strings which are integral as part of the strumming.
This is certainly a riff that can be used to strum away in the comfort of your own home or amongst friends……and you don’t even need a capo; simply play in the normal D position. No one will know!
