The Kooks: Rhythm & Strumming

Today we’re going to be looking at playing Rhythm Guitar, Chord Changes, Strumming, Learning Songs and have Jamming with a Band – all in one session!

Now it may seem pretty obvious what you need to do to learn a song, but if you want to learn something, and make it stick, then you need to learn it the right way.

To demonstrate this approach, I’ve taken a few videos from the BandJammer KickStart package, to create a a sequence of videos that not only teach you some great stuff, but hopefully that will also entertain you!

After all, playing guitar should be about having fun! Here’s what I’ve got for you…
1. My approach to learning songs
2. The Kooks Song Structure and Chord Diagrams
3. The Band Playing the full song
4. The Rhythm Guitar lesson for the song Chorus
5. Practice session for the Rhythm Guitar Chorus
6. The practice and jam video to play along with the band’s Rhythm Guitarist

Step 1: My approach to learning guitar songs
Here’s my approach to learning songs on guitar. This is also how I teach everything within BandJammer. It’s simple, structured, and hopefully fun!

Step 2: Download The Kooks Song Structure and Chord Diagrams
So now you need to download and print (or view on screen) both the chord diagrams and song structure. Then with the song structure in front of you, the next step is to watch the band playing the song, and follow the song on the structure. This will help you become more aware of the different parts of the song, and how they all fit together.

chord_diagrams
Step 3: Watch The Band playing the full song
This song has different structured parts for both Rhythm and Lead Guitar.

Step 4: The Rhythm Guitar lesson for the Chorus
This song has a lovely melodic chord sequence and strumming pattern.

Step 5: Practice session for the Chorus
Now it’s your turn to play along with me…

Step 6: Now Jam with this video – and have fun!
This is one of our series of Jam videos that’s available with each of the songs we teach. In this video we play down the Lead Guitar, so you can focus just on what the Rhythm Guitar is playing. This track also includes the drums, bass and vocals to help build you sense of rhythm and timing and to make it easier to follow the song structure.
So if you’re now familiar with the song, the structure, and the verse for Rhythm Guitar, you can now focus on having FUN!

Your comments please…
Hope you’re enjoying the videos, but please do remember to leave us a comment below. We really need and value any input you can provide – even if it’s just to say if you think this is ‘the best thing ever’ or just OK. Whatever your comment, we’d love to hear from you. Thanks – and have fun! Andy

I like the lessons as they are a good indicator to the level I intend to get to. I fail to expless my feelings to this brand new experience in my journey to become one of the best in guiter playing.

    Hi BJ,

I get my customised Fender copy back this week. This comes at just the right time for me. I have been an acoustic player for 15 years and I play on the acoustic circuit in Colne, Burnley and Hebdon Bridge. I am moving into the electric phase now. I want to learn Chuck Berry, Hendrix, Led Zep, Pink Floyyd and some metal. ow apt for timing. I will get the full programm at the end of August, this looks amazing. I am recording my acoustic album from October 3rd 2011.

    All the Best

    Rob

From some of your videos, I understand you have a trained ear.

Absolutely fantastic. Independently of the songs if they are great or not for me this is the best and most enjoyable way of learning music.

I think the most important thing here is to catcth the musical concepts and the apply ‘em into your own way of playing no matter what kind of style you play musical principles are the same.

Thanks a bunch for your great lessons 6 comments Andy.

At first I thought the selection of songs was not that great but once you look at the choices you can then realize that each one gives you a different idea and learning technique. Thanks for the help don’t know if I will join at this time I already subscribe to Lick Library

Still watching and learning Andy – it’s a pity I don’t recognise the songs, living in Western Australia means that you are a musical outcast, there’s very little music here nowadays.
    Regards

    Hey Andy,
I’m a musician of 35 yrs, professional/part time, and tho simple, I love the tunes you’re picking to share. I have strived to share music in a fundementally different way such as you. There’s a lot of Nay Sayers out there to put you down and question your method. Just keep on chuggin’ along. You’re doing great. Anytime music is shared, it’s valuable. Do you think you could throw in a lesson about Modern Metal Rhythm patterns?

Great lessons. Whats great is the jam at the end and breakdown of segments. If want to play lead or choras can do either or both. Great however wonder why payment is in $ not pounds? The price equates to maybe 2 hours tuition in the Uk therefore not that expensive.

Today we're looking at Power Chords and the classic JJ Cale song Cocaine. Although this is very much more in the style of the Eric Clapton version.

Sad news................"The Father of Loud" Jim Marshall, the founder of Marshall amps, died today aged 88. Slash tweeted "The news of Jim Marshall passing is deeply saddening. R & R will never be the same w/out him. But, his amps will live on FOREVER!"

I say, set up yer stack and rock heaven 'till it shakes.

That man defined the heavy rock guitar sound.

Yes it's happy birthday to Johann Sebastian Bach...born in 1685. Did he influence any great rock guitarists????
