THE KOOKS – She Moves In Her Own Way

If we are to talk about some fresh and original sounding bands that emerged on the musical scene in the last few years, The Kooks is definitely one of the names that come in mind. Formed in 2004 by a bunch of students at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, the band immediately began rehearsals in order to record a demo. Like most young British bands, The Kooks needed the demo in order to get some club gigs. They recorded an EP and passed it to a guy, who promised to help them get the gigs they wanted. However, it turned out that this guy was a manager, who offered them a recording deal.

This was a big surprise for The Kooks, as they never expected to get a recording deal so soon – only 3 months after their formation. Not only that, but they were signed by one of the major British labels – Virgin Records. However, The Kooks decided not to enter the studio immediately, because they weren’t feeling ready enough for recording an album. Instead, with the full support of their label, they decided to embark on a tour, which they believed would help them shape their sound and develop their musical style. This proved to be a right decision, so following their tour, The Kooks entered Konk Studios in London to the original material they had prepared for their debut album.

This resulted in the release of “Inside In/Inside Out” in 2006 – The Kook’s first studio album which featured an eclectic mix of songs like “Eddie’s Gun”, “Sofa Song”, “Naïve”, “Ooh La” and of course “She Moves in Her Own Way”. The mix of musical styles included reggae, pop, ska and rock, with “She Move in Her Own Way” carrying a typical indie pop sound and being heavily influenced by the 60s British Invasion movement that featured bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. With its release “She Moves in Her Own Way” peaked at #7 in the UK Singles Chart and later even received a nominee at The Brit Awards. The album itself earned the band the “Best UK & Ireland Act” award at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards.

The commercial success of “Inside In/Inside Out” helped the band to win the mainstream media attention and transformed them into an important element of the British music scene. About a year after its release, the album was certified quadruple platinum by the British Phonographic Industry, and “She Moves in Her Own Way” was acclaimed as the most popular of all Kooks guitar songs. The song stands out with its great combination of acoustic and lightly-overdriven electric guitars, with the acoustic guitar playing mostly open chords and the electric adding some interesting elements to complement the overall sound. So, you will never go wrong if you decide to learn how to play “She Moves in Her Own Way” by The Kooks on your own acoustic or electric guitar.
