SNOW PATROL – RUN

Featured on their third studio album “Final Straw”, “Run” brought Snow Patrol their first mainstream success reaching #5 in the UK charts. “Run” also had a really nice video that first aired in 2003 and the song itself was featured on many TV shows and compilation albums, helping the band reach even broader audience. However, this successful period for Snow Patrol was preceded by some hard moments for the band members.

In 2001 the band was dropped by Jeepster, which was their label at that time, and although there were a number of major labels that were showing potential interest to sign the band, it turned out that the band members were out of cash and without a decent record deal, so they had no other choice, but to make personal sacrifices in order to raise enough money to keep the band going. For example, Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol’s frontman) had to sell the majority of records from his personal collection, so he can earn money for the band.

Run” was written exactly during this miserable period for Snow Patrol and no wonder that it sounds so melancholical. However, the band was still desperate for attention at that time. With no label support, they reached their low point playing a show in front of 18 people. Around 2003 the band members started loosing faith that they will ever get signed. Luckily, thanks to an old acquaintance in the face of Richard Smernicki, the band finally got a record deal with Polydor and entered studio to record their third album under the supervision of producer Jacknife Lee. And that’s how “Run” was born in the way we all know it.

Many young musicians want to learn how to play Run by Snow Patrol and it’s obvious why. First of all, this is one of the easy guitar songs that anyone can learn playing, second of all it’s a hit single that everyone knows and would like to hear on gigs. The drums are really simple and there are no drum fills at all, the vocals are relatively low and in the comfortable range of every baritone singer, the guitar plays mostly power chords and the bass plays no melodic figures at all, so all of these make Run a perfect song to play on gigs, rehearse with your band or to use in order to test potentially new band members.
