ROBERT PALMER – Addicted To Love

“Who was Robert Palmer?” a younger reader might probably ask. Well, the straightforward answer is: Robert Palmer was an English singer, songwriter and Grammy Award winner, who was well known for his distinctive timbre and his tendency to mix many different music styles in his songs and albums. And speaking of Robert Palmer songs, I’m sure everyone remembers “Addicted To Love” – without argument the biggest hit of Robert Palmer that even the younger readers have surely heard at least once.

Addicted To Love” was recorded at Compass Point Studios – a famous recording studio located in the city of Nassau on the Bahamas – and featured some incredible musicians like guitarist Andy Taylor (ex-Duran Duran) and drummer Tony Thompson (ex-Chic). Actually, both Taylor and Thompson were partnering Palmer in the supergroup Power Station before that, but “Addicted To Love” had nothing to do with Power Station, as it was intended to appear on Robert Palmer’s brand new album “Riptide” along with 8 other tracks. The bass duties were assigned to Bernard Edwards from Chic, who also acted as a producer of the whole album.

“Riptide” was released in November 1985 and “Addicted To Love” was chosen as the lead single. A music video was shot that quickly gained popularity and received serious airplay on MTV. The video featured popular fashion models, who were dressed identically and were all wearing the same makeup, thus trying to resemble showroom mannequins. The video later received an iconic status and was even “covered” by Shania Twain in 1997 for her song “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!”

The success of the music video resulted in a growing interest in the single itself, which eventually led to achievements like #1 on the Billboard Top 100 and on the Mainstream Rock Tracks charts, #5 on the UK Singles Chart and #1 on the Australian Kent Music Report. “Addicted To Love” also earned Robert Palmer a Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Throughout the years, the song has been covered by artists like Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Van Halen and many more.

As a summary – “Addicted To Love” is a very catchy, easy guitar song, that is really loved by the crowd, so it’s definitely worth adding it to your repertoire of easy guitar songs, because it really isn’t a hard song to learn playing. It follows a pretty straightforward verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure. The verse is built on 3 chords and the chorus on only 2. These are G5, F5 and C5 for the verse, and F#5 and D5 for the chorus, so as you can see – nothing too hard – you can just grab your guitar right away and have some fun.
