REM – Losing My Religion
Losing My Religion by REM is without doubt one of the most successful REM songs of all times that earned the band millions of new fans worldwide back when it got released in 1991. This is also the most recognizable REM song that is often shown as an example of their typical sound and songwriting style, although if you dig deeper into REM’s work, you will hear that most of their songs include a serious presence of electric guitars and that along with the ballades that are more similar to Losing My Religion, there are many REM songs that carry a certain feeling of energy and happiness.
For guitar players, the REM songs definitely fit the “easy guitar songs” description, yet “easy” doesn’t mean bad sounding. Just the contrary – REM’s music is very pleasant to listen to and playing it on your guitar can only bring you some joy. The REM songs are also ideal for jamming with friends. Loosing My Religion is based on some of the most used guitar chords that every guitar player, even a complete beginner, should know perfectly. These are: E minor, A minor, D and G, and as REM guitarist Peter Buck himself says: “You can’t really say anything bad about these chords – they just sound good.” However, the tricky thing about Loosing My Religion is that its main riff isn’t performed on guitar, but on mandolin.
An interesting fact is that back in 1991, when “Out Of Time” (REM’s seventh studio album) was about to be released, the band had a serious debate with their label Warner Bros. Records regarding which song should be selected as a lead single. Buck, Mills, Stipe and Berry insisted on Loosing My Religion, but the label was a bit worried about their decision, because the product management thought that Loosing My Religion was an unusual track for a single and there were serious doubts that it will earn the acclaim of fans and critics. Furthermore, REM refused to promote their album with a tour, which made it even hard for Warner to accept their decision, however in the end they decided to respect it, so Loosing My Religion became the lead single for Out Of Time and the lack of touring was compensated with plenty of media appearances on TV and radio.
Surprisingly, Loosing My Religion quickly earned the admiration of critics and fans, and received heavy airplay on both TV and radio. Out Of Time itself sold over 10 Million copies. In addition, Loosing My Religion stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 21 consecutive weeks and earned the band two Grammy Awards – for Best Pop Performance by a Group and for Best Short Form Music Video. The single was also listed at number 169 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time chart.
