FOO FIGHTERS – Long Road To Ruin

Revolving around ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, the Foo Fighters managed to build a steady name on the American rock music scene and to produce numerous hit singles. One of them is “Long Road To Ruin” that was featured on their sixth studio album entitled “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace”. “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace” was released on the market in 2007 and sold over 100 000 copies during the first week of its release. It quickly earned its place in the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 album chart. For 3 years, the album sold almost 900 000 solely in the United States. In addition, “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace” earned the Foo Fighters two Grammy Awards – for “Best Rock Album” and “Best Hard Rock Performance”.

“Long Road To Ruin” was released as a single, a couple of months before the official album release. It didn’t take too long for it to top the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and to stay at #1 for seven consecutive weeks, as well as to enter the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart reaching #2, and the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the UK, “Long Road To Ruin” entered the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart and peaked at #1 in the UK Rock Chart.

The huge commercial success of “Long Road To Ruin” was provoked not only by the great sound and melodic lines that the song carries, but also by the hilarious music video that aired on MTV about 2 months prior to the release of the single. Comedy driven videos are typical for the Foo Fighters (we all remember “Learn To Fly” and “Everlong” to name a few), but this time they really did a fantastic job. The video is a spoof of a 70s soap opera and is really funny, so it easily earned the acclaim of the fans and raised their interest for the album.

Musicwise, or more likely guitarwise, “Long Road To Ruin” impresses with brilliant guitar sound and a very nice guitar solo. The quality of the guitar sound isn’t a surprise at all, as it is typical for all Foo Fighters songs, but the guitar solo really makes the song special and that’s a good reason for every guitar player to sit down and learn how to play “Long Road To Ruin” by Foo Fighters on his guitar. The song isn’t too hard to play, as long as you listen carefully and recognize the right guitar chords. It has a very powerful chorus driven by the typical Foo Fighters songwriting style. So, in summary “Long Road To Ruin” by Foo Fighters is a great guitar song to learn to play and jam on.
