BLACK SABBATH– Paranoid

With no arguement Black Sabbath’s greatest album, Paranoid, not only topped the charts in the UK and reached multi platinum status for four consecutive times, but it also featured the self-named hit single Paranoid, which quickly became not only one of the signature Black Sabbath songs, but was also recognized as the band’s best song up to this day. “Paranoid”, the album, also featured awesome Black Sabbath songs like “War Pigs” and “Iron Man”, which everyone has heard. The album was released in 1971 and was initially meant to be named “War Pigs”. However, fearing from the eventual reactions of the Vietnam War supporters at that time, the label of Black Sabbath decided to change the name of the album to “Paranoid”.

Paranoid” the song was released as a single preceding the official album release. It’s funny that it was never intended for this song to be featured on the album, simply because it didn’t exist at the time the band was recording it. However Black Sabbath’s label, Vertigo Records, pushed the band to record a hit single that, according to them, Black Sabbath was lacking for that particular album. “Paranoid” was written and recorded literally in the last minutes of the album recording sessions. According to drummer Bill Ward, Tony Iommi had the idea of the main guitar lick and taking it as a base to build on, the band needed about half and hour to construct the song and finally record it. This rush however resulted in the creation of what is recognized as the greatest heavy metal song of all times.

The song has been covered by a countless number of artists, including Megadeth, Avenged Sevenfold, Type O Negative, George Lynch, Queens Of The Stone Age and Mystic Prophecy. Another reason for “Paranoid” to remain so popular throughout the years is that people associate it both with Black Sabbath and with Ozzy Osbourne as a solo artist, because Osbourne always performed in on his shows, usually as an encore, thus involving brilliant guitarists like Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde, whose guitar performances always gave the song a unique new sound.

“Paranoid” is especially popular throughout Europe and more precisely in countries like Finland, Norway, Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland.
