Back In Black

This great AC/DC song is renowned for its opening guitar riff played by the incomparable Angus McKinnon Young. The song as a whole always features in the top 20 of every heavy metal poll and is a tribute to their former lead singer Bon Scott who died on 19th February 1980. So this is an invaluable intro riff to learn – as long as you have the ability to play open chords (mainly 5ths) learning this riff should not prove too difficult.
As usual, Angus Young plays the song on his Gibson SG and, typically, uses an overdriven sound that still offers a clarity so all the notes and chords can be clearly heard. This makes sure the melody line is always clearly audible.
Although the overall riff is simple and played twice before the vocals make an entrance, there are 3 techniques that require mastering; namely, a simple string bend, using both left and right hands to ensure the chords and notes do not ring out and merge into one another and a slide down. There is also a catchy note run up on the bottom E string that separates the 2 chord riffs and also provides a lead into the vocals.
Not only is this a great warm up routine, but you will easily be able to impress your friends with this on both an acoustic and electric guitar. Enjoy.

Today we're looking at Power Chords and the classic JJ Cale song Cocaine. Although this is very much more in the style of the Eric Clapton version.

Sad news................"The Father of Loud" Jim Marshall, the founder of Marshall amps, died today aged 88. Slash tweeted "The news of Jim Marshall passing is deeply saddening. R & R will never be the same w/out him. But, his amps will live on FOREVER!"

I say, set up yer stack and rock heaven 'till it shakes.

That man defined the heavy rock guitar sound.

Yes it's happy birthday to Johann Sebastian Bach...born in 1685. Did he influence any great rock guitarists????
