The Eagles Already Gone

This simple sounding song is awash with trademark Eagles harmonies, coupled with a great intertwining dual guitar solo played by Glenn Frey and Don Felder. The song was written by Jack Tempchin and Robert Arnold Strandlund and featured on their 1974 album On the Border. Nether of the writers of this song were in The Eagles.

There a couple of interesting facts about the song. First of all, Glenn Frey agreed to use the song as it was about a relationship break up and was something that he had just been through. However, despite the lyrics, the song is really uplifting and gives you a real feel good factor.

Secondly there is a squealy (harmonic) played on the guitar at the end of the line (heaven knows it wasn’t you that set me free.” Many people thought this wasn’t mean to be there, but having heard Don Felder’s squealy in the second chorus of Hotel California, there is little doubt it was genuine and meant to be there.

Already Gone is in the key of G and is a really good guitar workout in terms of learning, not only the guitar solos and fills, but also the intro, which is played over the chords of G, D and C. This part of the song was played by Bernie Leadon and is relatively challenging to play accurately due to the individualistic way he plays, plucks the strings and uses the chords to create the melody lines.

Having said that, it’s a great intro to a great guitar song and you will feel great when you master it. It will be the start of your great guitar work out.

Today we're looking at Power Chords and the classic JJ Cale song Cocaine. Although this is very much more in the style of the Eric Clapton version.

Sad news................"The Father of Loud" Jim Marshall, the founder of Marshall amps, died today aged 88. Slash tweeted "The news of Jim Marshall passing is deeply saddening. R & R will never be the same w/out him. But, his amps will live on FOREVER!"

I say, set up yer stack and rock heaven 'till it shakes.

That man defined the heavy rock guitar sound.

Yes it's happy birthday to Johann Sebastian Bach...born in 1685. Did he influence any great rock guitarists????
